The Friends have become a valuable and indispensable asset to the North Port Library as their accomplishments have been many throughout the years.
In 1975 the Friends raised the funds to purchase the two bedroom house that originally stood on the site where the present structure stands today. They operated a free library with only the volunteers and the 5,000 donated books.
By 1992, the library had outgrown the enlarged house, so the one cent sales tax for Capital Improvement was used to create the new Library building on the site of the small house. The Friends raised nearly $200.000, to acquire extra equipment and furniture not covered by Sarasota County.
In 2004 the Friends provided the Studio Visual Equipment and many more enhancements in the children’s area.
The outside stone table & bench was purchased by Friends.
Through grants received by Friends we have been able to purchase computers, software and the required yearly licenses.
We sponsor the annual 1800s Christmas program that is held on Sunday and is free to the community. This program features crafts for all ages, seasonal music groups and costumes of the 1800s.
